Hi Elizabeth, Icelandics are just like any other breed. They need to be given specific signals that they understand to respond correctly. Icelandics are more complicated to ride correctly because of their extra gaits, so it's important for you to go to the library and read as much about them as possible and then to find someone who has one to show you a few things. Then it's best to take lessons from someone knowledgeable. Icelandics are wonderful, but you need alot of help finding the right one for you and yes they are worth the trouble if want to develop a real bond with one.
